Material Science-Honors
Instructor: Mr. Peter A. Gange
MATERIAL SCIENCE HONORS is a course intended to introduce students to the laboratory and classroom experiences that they would encounter in the exciting field of material science and engineering (MSE). This course is a joint project between Middlesex High School, the Princeton University Center for Complex Materials (PCCM) and the U.S. Army-Fort Monmouth Communication Electronics Command.

This course started on July 25, 2011 at Princeton University. During their one week module, students attended lectures on globial warming & sustainable energy and were trained in the use of the Scanning Electron Microscope. Students toured the Shiseido America Inc. and the Princeton University Energy Plant.

Students were introduced to their research in the Globial Development Network, a program that challenges students to apply their understanding of material science concepts to real-world science & engineering challenges. Under the guidance of Professor Wole Soboyejo, founder & director of the U.S./Africa Materials Institute, students will design low-cost sustainable water filters.

Classes resumed in September, on the campus of Middlesex High School. Students will study different materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors & composites.

Students will also complete intergraded modules on Material Structure, Smart Sensors, Material Performance, Biodegradable Materials, Biosensors, Concrete & Sustainable Energy!

Using a grant from ASM International, the Materials Information Society, students will test the safety of aluminum bats.

Under the guidance of CERDEC Directorate Sam DiVita at Fort Monmouth, students will test the effects of mica-silicate solutions on flame retardancy for the Development & Engineering Center at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, the birthplace of nanoscience!

SCIENCE OUTREACH
The future of America's strength in science and technology depends on the interest and proficiency of our nation's youth, school teachers, and the general public in math, science, and engineering. The Material Science Honors program is dedicated to promoting scientific and technological literacy. They have developed and implemented a number of educational programs through the establishment of unique partnerships between Princeton University scientists, K-12 educators and the local and global science community.
